(Medival Christian Hymn)
Claudia Copeland received her B.A. in music from the University of California, San Diego, with an emphasis in experimental music and classical vocal and piano performance, including medieval and renaissance vocal music. She is a singer with the New Orleans Opera and Vox Feminae, the women's choir of the New Orleans early music ensemble Musica da Camera, and has performed various solo and ensemble pieces throughout New Orleans.
She will perform O viridissima virga, a mystical Catholic piece by Hildegard von Bingen, a German abbess, composer, and philosopher who lived from 1098 to 1179 A.D. A writer of theological, botanical, and medicinal texts, von Bingen stands out for her mystical vision of Catholic spirituality, and in this piece expresses the Virgin Mary as a green branch, with rich imagery of new life blossoming forth in the spring season, fertility, radiant light, and the earth.
