New Orleans Zen Temple

(Buddhist Chanting)

The New Orleans Zen Temple has offered Zen practice in the city for over 35 years. While zazen (seated concentration) is the heart of the practice, other forms activate the practice in daily life, including chanting and playing instruments. The concentration required in performing ceremony is an integral part of Zen training, providing an opportunity for selfless absorption in the physical expression of the sutras.

Members of the sangha will perform the traditional ceremony as it was passed down from Taisen Deshimaru to the current Abbot of the temple, Richard Collins Roshi. Texts and translations of the Hannya Shingyo (Heart Sutra) and the Four Great Vows of the Bodhisattva will be provided. Audience members are welcome to participate.

Housed in the building that held Cosimo Matassa’s Jazz City recording studio at 748 Camp Street in the CBD, the New Orleans Zen Temple offers daily meditation, weekly discussions, monthly introductions, and quarterly retreats.
